Diacritical characters do not display in OSX notifications

Description

For example if I connect my Kindle to my Mac I do get growl notifications where calibre informs me about the device it found. In German device is "Ger?t", but the notification only says "Gert", so I suspect that there is a character encoding issue (UTF8 vs. ISO-8859) that causes the umlaut character to disappear.

Even this web page did mangle my ticket, in the preview of the ticket the a-umlaut was still the word "Ger?t", but now it disappeared. it should be auml.

Fixed in branch trunk. The fix will be in the next release.
